Tub Chairs - Classic Furniture?
Tub chairs are an interesting phenomena. Of course, the design has been knocking around for ages, but it was only in the sixties and seventies that it ever came to the general public’s attention. This, strangely enough, was through the medium of sci-fi television series.
If you think back to the old programmes, like Dr. Who and Battlstar Galactica, in amongst all the tin foil suits and cardboard laser guns you will have found a few tub chairs. Usually they were some garish colour - orange and lime green seemed popular - with chrome legs. Somehow they were meant to be futuristic.
However, now we’ve reached the future the tub chair seems to have grown up with the rest of us. I’m sure there’s a market for lime green tub chairs with chrome legs, but conversly, they are ‘retro’! No, now the tub chair is the seat of choice for the well-to-do person’s lounge. Of course, it’s new mature look involves real leather upholstery and solid oak legs, and sits pride of place next to chesterfield sofas, on shag pile carpets, along with solid oak living room furniture
It’s easy to dismiss tub chairs as uncomfortable, as they don’t look entirely natural (like an armchair, for example), but once you have sat in one you’ll find they hug you and are very cozy.
Whatever your taste, be it retro or classic modern, it is well worth considering a tub chair. Not only do they fit into a living room, but the corner of a bedroom benefits. Or, for a larger house, the games room is a good home for one or two.
I’d just like to second your comments about tub chairs. I have a beautiful house full of antique oak furniture which I have spent a huge amount of time and effort to source.
My very favourite piece of furniture though is a lime green tub chair that I’ve had since my days in teacher training college in the 1960s!
Isn’t it funny how you can become fond of something that, on the face of it, may seem a bit tasteless? It may be because you love lime green tub chairs, but I would say it’s because of its sentimental value.
One thing you may not know though, that tub chair of yours is probably worth a bob or two. Retro furniture from the sixties can fetch a surprising amount of money on ebay or at specialist furniture actutions. If it really is your favorite item of furniture, don’t part with it, but you may want to get it valued for insurance purposes.
Great blog. I’ll definitely be back. Thanks again, Felix
